Ende 2004 sorgte Aeon Spoke mit ihrem Debütalbum „Above The Buried Cry“ für Aufsehen in ihrer Szene. Niemand hatte ein solch atmosphärisches, wie songwriterisch ausgeklügeltes und gleichzeitig so unfassbar melancholisches Album erwartet. Nicht von ihnen. Denn die die beiden Masterminds von AEON SPOKE Sean Reinert (Drums) & Paul Masvidal (Vocals, Guitar) waren vor der Gründung dieses, ihres neuen Projektes die Hauptprotagonisten zweier ziemlichen stark Progressive- und Death-Metal geprägten und in der Szene als feste Größen etablierten Bands – Cynic und Gordian Knot.
Nicht nur, dass die Kritiken für ihr Debüt überwältigend waren, nun schrieben auch die Blogs der Musikfans weltweit über diese unglaubliche Wandlung vom Saulus zum Paulus, nahmen Metalfans Radiohead- und Coldplay-Platten in die Hand, um herauszufinden, wie diese Wandlung möglich sein kann und: wo es denn zu finden ist, das fehlende Bindeglied in der Musikgeschichte zwischen dunklem, hartem, schmerzerfülltem Sound und poetischem Naturalismus.
Zwei Jahre später wissen wir, dass AEON SPOKE in der Lage sind, darauf schlüssig eine Antwort zu geben. Mit dem selbst betiteltem zweiten Album der Kalifornier, das hierzulande am 30.März 2007 erscheinen wird und das von der Songdichte und dem ästhetischen Anspruch ein beeindruckend großer künstlerischer Schritt ist, dürfte sich die Band endgültig in der Liga der großen anspruchsvollen, zeitgenössischen Popbands – auch entgegen der Dominanz all der britischen und schwedischen Bands auf diesem Gebiet – wieder finden.
